Squall Leonhart, student at the prestigious Balamb Garden, is facing the most important challenge of his young life. Candidate for an elite mercenary organization known as SeeD, the taciturn gunblade specialist prepares for his field exam. This book is both a standalone title and the 180-page preview of an unofficial novelisation of Final Fantasy VIII by Micah Rodney. SeeD: The Beginning retells the early events of the critically-acclaimed game, covering beyond the conclusion of the Dollet mission.

M. J. Gallagher was co-author and project manager on this venture.

First released in 2019, the novella was a collaboration by fan creators from around the world, produced in association with KupoCon.
